On Saturday May 20th, 29 people showed up for the Depave Montréal planting activity. Under the close supervision of Isabelle Giasson, our landscape architect, we placed and planted each type of plant: 5 trees, 131 bushes and 85 other perennials, including climbing plants. It was a long, lively day where each one contributed how they could, be it preparing lunch or carrying rolls of sod. Even a neighbour passed by in the afternoon with boxes of donuts and coffee, to encourage the people engaged in beautifying the block.
The sod came in right at the end and the few volunteers left kept going until the evening to make sure everything was finished and cleaned up.
The weekend before, on May 13th, our Depave day was incredible! With one of the rainiest springs in recent history, we had a window of time until mid-afternoon before the rain started. To everyone’s pleasant surprise, we didn’t need to worry as we finished the Depave within a couple of hours. The 22 hardworking volunteers included mostly residents, but also volunteers from the community, volunteers from outside and even Alix Taylor from GCC, were incredibly efficient and motivated and removed 120m² of asphalt! Between the activities contractors had come remove gravel with a mechanical shovel, bring in fresh soil and drop off the plants.
